The Wonders of Wonton Wrappers

(This is one of Stacey’s quick and easy go-to favorites.  A definite crowd pleaser that makes even the most distinguished palate jump for joy!)

Where would one find these wonderful creations?  Unless you want to undertake the task of making them yourself, the easiest thing to do is to go to the market and pick up a package, usually located by the tofu.  There are many quick and tasty ways to enjoy wontons.  First, decide on your filling.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Diced shrimp or crab with mai ploy sauce
  • Cream cheese with jalapeños
  • Ground sausage and onions (cooked, please)
  • Black beans, corn, and diced plantains
  • Mushrooms sautéed with garlic
  • Any yummy filling you can think of! (Fillings should be fully cooked and delicious before going in the wrappers.  So, taste it!)

Lay out a few wrappers and put a dollop of filling into the center of each.  Using a small pastry brush, dip the brush in water and lightly wet the four sides of the wrapper.  Create your wonton by pressing two opposite corners together, then bring the other two corners in to the center so that all four corners come together into a pretty star shape.  Ensure that all sides are pressed together so that no filling can seep out the edges.  Prepare all wontons before cooking.

Heat one inch of oil in a small saucepan.  Gently place three or four wontons into the oil, lightly browning them on the bottom.  Then turn the wontons onto one side, cooking the side.  Continue turning until all sides are lightly browned.  Remove from oil and place onto a paper towel to drain.  Continue process until all wontons are cooked.  Drain on paper towels.  Cool them before eating (don’t burn your face!).

Unused wonton wrappers can be saved for future wontons, or can be sprinkled with favorite spices and baked in the oven for a crispy treat!
